Twelve months to write something that lasts
A funded residency for early-career scholars — stipend, research allowance, conference travel, and the time to use them properly.
What the fellowship provides
Most early-career researchers in Pakistan do not lack ideas. They lack uninterrupted time, a supervisor with the bandwidth to read carefully, and a budget for the fieldwork the project actually needs. The fellowship supplies all three for twelve months.
Monthly stipend
Paid monthly for twelve months, sufficient to make the residency your primary commitment.
Research allowance
A dedicated budget for fieldwork, data acquisition, transcription and translation.
Conference travel
Funding to present the work at one international conference during the fellowship year.
Supervision
A named supervisor from the board, plus a second reader from outside the institute.
Editorial support
Full manuscript editing on the output, whether or not it is submitted to an IRIP journal.
Desk and library
A permanent desk at Al Ghaffar Plaza and access to the institute's subscriptions.
Who can apply
- A completed MPhil, or a PhD awarded within the last five years.
- A research project in law, the social sciences, Islamic studies or policy research.
- Willingness to be resident in Islamabad for at least eight of the twelve months.
- No concurrent full-time employment for the duration of the fellowship.
- At least one prior peer-reviewed publication, or a thesis chapter of publishable standard.
What we expect in return
One completed manuscript submitted to a peer-reviewed journal by the end of the twelve months. Two seminars presented to the institute — one at the midpoint on method, one at the end on findings. And a willingness to read other fellows' drafts as carefully as you would want yours read.
